I make handcrafted molded relief tiles with Arts & Crafts, Art Deco and various world design (so-called “ethnic’) influences. They are generally finished in satin-matte glazes or, occasionally, left partially or entirely unglazed to reveal the natural fired stoneware clay. Artisan tile offers possibilities for richness, subtlety, and adventure in embellishing a home that cannot be matched with standard commercial tile.

Some of my designs are pattern elements that combine to form a larger pattern or texture when repeated across a surface; others are intended as individual decorative inserts in a surrounding field of plain tiles or stone. I particularly like to work with stylized flower or plant forms, but also have tiles that are suggestive of Moorish geometric designs and Pre-Columbian textiles.

My tiles are appropriate for a variety of installations, including fireplaces, doorway surrounds, kitchens, baths, stair risers and garden settings. They may also be incorporated in tabletops or displayed individually on the wall or on a small stand as a decorative object. I offer layout design services and can work with a client to create a custom installation.

At my studio, located in the ceramic group space known as Earthworks, I maintain a permanent display of work and regularly have a few dozen tiles available for purchase. In most instances, tiles are made to order. Completion time depends upon the size of the order and prior commitments, and may take from four to seven weeks.
